On February 22, 23, & 24,2002, the Olav Haavaldsrud Timber Company hosted a regional curling bonspiel to help raise capital funds for the Hornepayne Community Arena. The "Dare to Feed the Bears!" bonspiel was developed from arequest by the community to help in their fund-raising activities. Belinda Kistemaker deliberated over finding a creative way to generate these funds in a manner that would promote the community on a regional basis and provide recreational benefit to participants. We would all like to thank Belinda for her efforts. Many of the early comments about the bonspiel from those who participated was how well the event was organized. The event's title sprang from an off-handed comment made during a regular season curling game. The Olav Haavaldsrud Timber Co. had placed their bear logo within the center of each curling button. Feeding the bears became an expression synonymous with drawing to the button. The response to this event was phenominal! We owe a great debt to all sponsors who generously provided financial assistance towards this event. The entry fee was set at $400.00. The entry fees for each of the 22 teams were paid for by our team sponsors. Their support of this event, along with those event sponsors who provided materials, prizes and other guidance, helped to get this event off the ground. In particular we would like to thank those who not only sponsored teams but came from other cities to participate: Todd Malpass and his team, Dan Plouffe, Ben Lacroix's team, Eric Cave and his team, and Jim Wickman and his family. The final donation to the Hornepayne Community Arena Fund (from 20% of team entry fees, auctions [sorry Dan P.], some extremely generous donations at the door, and donations from the C&D Paul Curling Club) was $8,000.00 The Olav Haavaldsrud Timber Company would like to extend it's gratitude to all who helped make this event possible including: Belinda Kistemaker, Drago Stephanic, Gail Jaremy and the Municipal Office staff, Bruno Bin (the ice was perfect, Bruno), David Anderson, Ernie and Marnie Paul, the C & D Paul Curling Club, and all those who volunteered their time and energy to make this event possible. Finally, we would like to thank all who participated and hope that you will take the opportunity to give us your comments in our web forum. |
